Lactobacillus GG

Reinforcments are on the way!

So, I was taking Florastor and patiently counting the days to finish my fight with this bug, when I found a study that said something like, “Lactobacillus GG is effective in reducing the 3-wk recurrence rate of Clostridium difficile”[1].  What is this?  Give me some!  Lactobacillus GG is another probiotic that appears to be safe and actually beneficial in the fight against C Diff.

I was skeptical, but excited.  I had already read tons of studies on Florastor being effective in preventing recurrence of this darn bacteria, so I started reading about Lactobacillus.

Pediatricians are using it for kids who are on antibiotics.

It is safe and well tolerated.

And best of all studies are showing that it is effective in fighting C Diff!

So, I hurried to search for where I could get some.  The only product that I could find that was backed by a major company for it’s quality, was Culturelle.

If you need it in the next hour, you can find it most pharmacies and at places like Costco now.

I suggest getting on their monthly automatic shipments so it comes every month right on schedule, because once you read the benefits and risks you’re going to want to stay on this longer term (not true of Florastor).

Well, I was convinced and started taking the recommended dose for prevention of recurrence.

Started with symptoms about a week ago. Been on Flagyl since Monday. Shouldn’t I be feeling better 6 days in? The stools look better, but still cramping and still fairly frequent in the bathroom.

I’m so frustrated. I was on clindamycin, and got c.diff… I was put on flagyl, that didn’t work, it came back a 2nd time, I was put on a low dose of vancomycin, it came back a 3rd time, I was put on ANOTHER heavier dose of vancomycin, it seemed to disappear, and now all of a sudden I have it for a 4th time. I’m taking the culturelle probiotic that helped for awhile, is it a bad diet I’m on or something. I’m scared, frustrated, mad… what should I ask to be done? I’m at a loss.

So, for those of you who have been through this C-diff crud is the tricky thing that everyones body reacts differently to treatment and you just have to keep trying and trying different things? This website has been very helpful but I am scared to death after my 10 year old son sas hospitalized with c-diff we have had a second bout. The information posted on this website states that if you relapse once you have a 65% chance of relapsing again. I am seeking a third doctors opinion this week. What do you think should I just skip the pediatricians and Gp’s and go straight to a GI specialist. My sons pediatrician does not seem to concerned even after I have asked him questions after questions and I tell him my son is still so tired! He just wants to be a normal 10 year old boy and it breaks my heart to see what he has gone through! Eleven days and he gets his tonsils out in hopes to avoid more antibiotics due to strep, pnuemonia, and everything else he seems to pick up right now ant the drop of a hat! Does anyone else find they get illnesses easy or is it just because we started this with swine flu and strep at the same time and everyting has weakened his immune system to nothing!

Thanks! A very tired and frustrated MOM
